How it works

Your whole running history counts, from day one.

  1. Import your routes

Connect Strava, or import GPX files from any watch or app. Runs and walks both count.

  2. Pass a station, collect it

Every subway station within 75 meters of your route is collected, dated by the route that got it first.

  3. Finish lines and boroughs

See what’s left on each line, plan your next route, and earn badges as you go.

The map

Every line, lit up as you collect it.

See your collected stations across all five boroughs. Filter by line or borough, find any station, and replay any route to see what it collected.

Badges

40 badges, one for every line.

Collect your first 10 stations, your first 100, every station on the G, all of Brooklyn, or every beach station from Coney Island to the Rockaways.

Your subway personality

Are you The Completionist, The Wanderer or a Run Commuter?

MetroDex reads how you move through the city and gives you a personality to match, ready to share.

Questions

Good to know

What is MetroDex?

MetroDex is a free app for runners and walkers in New York City. It reads the routes you’ve already logged and collects every subway station you passed, out of the 472 in the system.

How does a station get collected?

Any subway station within 75 meters of a route you ran or walked is collected. Your whole history counts, so importing years of runs can collect hundreds of stations at once.

Does it work with Strava?

Yes. Connect Strava to import your runs and walks, or import GPX files from any app or watch. MetroDex isn’t made or endorsed by Strava.

Do walks count, or only runs?

Walks count too. Any run or walk on foot collects the stations it passes.

Does MetroDex track my location?

No. MetroDex never uses live GPS. It only reads routes you’ve already recorded, and those routes stay on your device.

Is it free?

Yes. MetroDex is free and needs no account.

Does the Staten Island Railway count?

Yes. Its 21 stations are collected and tracked separately from the 472 subway stations, with their own line badge.
